Mice are an excellent choice for children as they are quite docile but active (mostly around dawn and dusk but can be woken gently and will normally play). They are very quick and can be hard to catch so it is probably best for older children who can cope with keeping the mice contained and not hurt them when they catch them. Generally mice are very friendly with people, they rarely bite and will come to the door of the cage to greet you, they enjoy free roaming on the sofa and cuddles. Mice have their own little personality and are quite intelligent. Mice should always live in groups as they are social creatures but female only groups are advised as two males tend to fight and mixed groups means the patter of tiny mouse feet. Mice are a prey species so they like places to hide, this may mean that you don’t see much of them for big chunks of the day. It is very entertaining giving your mice some cut up paper tissue or other nesting materials and watching them building their nest. Mice are quite clean animals, they spend a lot of time grooming but they aren't easy to litter train, females are definitely less smelly than males though. They are fairly low maintenance pets, they need their cages cleaned once to twice a week but there is little else to do except feed them and give them water and play with them, this makes them a good first pet.
