I had 3 male degus from the time they were babies till they were a year old. They would come up to you and come into your hand just to bite you, and they bit hard, drawing blood. They were easy to take care of, but I couldn't handle them. I eventually gave them away. I do not recommend them as a pet. I was very dedicated to them and gave them the best care, but they really did not work out for me. Some people do have good experiences with them. I got them from a hobby breeder, not a pet store. They ate pellets and timothy hay. I kept them in a tank because I had them in a cage initially and they escaped.
