We got Skittles, the hamster, at a pet store when my kids saw him and thought he was cute. I was looking for an animal for my younger children to take care of that would teach them pet responsibility. In hindsight, I should have thought the purchase through a little longer beforehand.

Skittles was a cute hamster and he was used to being handled and didn't bite when we got him. He loved to run on his wheel and through his tunnel maze.

The issues started when our cat become overly fascinated with Skittles. He would sit in front of Skittles cage constantly and paw at the door to try to open it. One day, the door must not have latched all the way and the cat managed to knock Skittles cage off the shelf which broke it open. Unfortunately, Skittles did not survive the encounter. :-(
