I received a guinea pig from my college roommates who were tired of me being so sad about missing my dogs. In their mind and hearts they thought this would be a good substitute as well as a pet that our landlord wouldn't find out about (we had a no pet rule). A couple of issues, foremost guinea pigs are not dogs and not even close enough in behaviors, care or companionship as a dog. But worse of all guinea pigs do make noise - our little buddy would squeak until he got a treat or attention or both! However, I did end up enjoying my little guy for over 5 years and he did provide distraction during those stressful college final exam weeks! I will warn people if they are thinking of getting one for kids - they do take a larger cage so need to have space and their cage needs to be cleaned very often (odor)
