There are many and pluses to owning a guinea pig. In particular I think it is extremely important that you pay attention to where you get your guinea pig from. I received Abner from a pet store where he was harshly handled and was not properly socialized. Therefore, he was extremely feisty and difficult to handle at times. It took a long time before he became comfortable with getting picked up and held. He was also always trying to figure out how to escape his habitat.

Going along with this, guinea pigs can be a very time consuming pet. You have to spend at the very least an hour with them every single day and they require a lot of space. There habitat isn't always easy to clean either and I definitely suggest keeping them away from dogs and cats. They truly should have a companion. Including Abner, I had two male guinea pigs and thankfully they got along quite well but had completely different personalities.

My final point is that guinea pigs can be great pets if you want a pet that you can play with and train with behavioral conditioning. However, if you don't have the time and patience to socialize them (especially if they came from a pet store), they are not the pet for you.
