I had an Wesstern Hog-nose snake for two years, and I have mixed feelings on owning this species. He was absolutely beautiful and, unlike some other Hog-noses I've seen, he had a pretty mild temperament. He never lunged at me, even when he was hungry, but he did bite a friend who was watching him because she startled him while he was burrowed in his sand. Seeing as this is a rear-fanged snake, I don't think it is a good snake for non-experienced snake owners. Also, he was not the brightest snake. If we fed him live food, he would just kind of chase it with his mouth open. He actually managed to bite himself a couple times, which led us to feed him dead food. This was a beautiful snake that was just so much fun to watch. I loved handling him, but I would never let a child or inexperienced person take him from his tank.
