Tropical Girdled Lizard - Cordylus tropidosternum

These hardy lizards come from the semi-arid regions of Southern Africa. They do very well in captivity provided they have a large amount of sandy substrate to dig their tunnels and ample hiding places. They require artificial UV lighting when kept indoors and they need to be kept in a warm dry vivarium setup. I would not recommend this species for beginners as there is little information on the internet about their care and husbandry to help you out if you are to go wrong but for intermediate to advanced keepers these can make amazing lizards to keep. They usually carry quite a high pricetag and please ensure that you buy a captive bred specimen as they are be poached in large numbers from their habitat here in Southern Africa and they are becoming very rare to find because of the illegal animal trade and their use in traditional medicine locally. They require large cages of at least 1,5m long x 80cm deep x 60cm high. A highly recommended species for advanced keepers.
