Over the years we've had four different tortoise's and they are simply the best! They're not for everyone, because of the fact that they need so much space. We built them a rather large enclosure in our back yard, complete with an umbrella, several pots for shade because though they're made for a hot climate you do have to make sure they don't overheat.
They're not picky eaters, but they do require lots of fresh food in addition to their feed (which we always wet before giving to them). Mr. Mister's favorite treat was actually hibiscus flowers, preferably the pink ones. Sometimes if you stepped into his enclosure with brightly painted toe nails he would rush over in hope that your toes were hibiscus flowers.
They're get along well with other animals, as they really just mind their own business. Our dogs would occasionally join them in their enclosures and just hang out. The tortoises never seemed to mind, they'd even lay near them sometimes.
They didn't mind kids either! As long as they didn't try to poke them that is. An all around low maintenance pet, that's good for a family, if they have the space.
