These are not for a Novice! They are beautiful creatures, but grow to be quite large and are very temperamental. They do allow you to be handled but seem to know if you are uncomfortable around them. Truthfully would much rather be left alone. Then fair better in a large terrarium so they can "hunt" for their food. They are very strong, so make sure their enclosure is secure at all times. Ours was an escape artist and trust me, it's a little scary finding a six foot reptile at the foot of your bed in first thing in the morning. Pet or no Pet. I do not recommend for families with small children, or small pets for that matter. They need a lot of attention meaning they need a clean and safe environment, they are prone of infection of not properly taken care of.
