If you're looking to get into reptile ownership, a Blue Tongue Lizard (or skink) is a great place to start.

They are easily handled and are not poisonous, making them safe for new owners to learn basic care for. They are also fantastic for kids.

Given that they are reptiles, they do require special care, although for a reptile, their care is easy enough. With a heat source, ample fresh water (but not too deep), clean substrate (floor covering) and fresh food, they can be a fantastic pet.

As with all animals, cleanliness is critical. Daily changing of substrate, water and food is important. Information on good Blue Tongue ownership is easy to find online, with many pet stores also able to help. Licences may be required to own one, so it is best to check with your local government authority.

While they may not be the prettiest reptile around (apart from their striking blue tongue), they are a fantastic pet and can give you and your family much joy!
