I’ve kept and bred bearded dragons for decades. They make wonderful pets, and are among the best selections for new keepers. I highly recommend them to anyone seeking a reptilian pet.

Some of the best traits of bearded dragons include their calm, docile personalities and modest adult size (they reach about 18 to 22 inches in length). They are also a lot of fun to watch and quite comical while chasing down crickets in their cage. With proper care, they can live for 5 to 10 years and perhaps longer.

In addition to a spacious cage with plenty of climbing opportunities, bearded dragons require full-spectrum lighting and rather warm cage temperatures, ranging from about 80 degrees on the cool side to around 105 degrees for the basking spot. They also require a diet composed of both live insects (crickets and mealworms) and dark green vegetables, such as collard, turnip and mustard greens.
