A ball python is an excellent snake if you're looking for your first snake! They only grow up to 4 foot long, they don't have any complex needs, just the standard set up of vivarium, heat mat etc, water bowl and something to hide under!
They are great to handle and watch them explore their surroundings.
I would recommend only buying a snake if you know that you will be able to confidently handle picking up a snake! otherwise this may make ownership very difficult! With snakes it sounds silly, but they can detect your fear and it makes them nervous too!
So starting with a small snake which you should ensure hasn't got a nasty temper before you buying it is ideal!!
Sometimes they can be quite fussy with their food, and leave their mice untouched, so they will need a lot of coaxing to eat it, which generally means dangling a dead mouse by it's tail until it goes for it (making sure it doesn't end up biting you too)
Unfortunately my snake died a year after I got it, It was a very fussy eater, and then had problems shedding, but it wouldn't put me off owning another snake!
