My name is Janet Forster and I live in Perth in sunny Western Australia. I am an addicted horse person. I own and breed dilute Australian Stock Horses under the stud prefix Tintaras. A dilute is a horse or pony that carries a coat colour dilution gene which modifies the appearance of its coat. I also currently have cats and a couple of blonde chooks which match the colour of my blonde horses.

, 50% heterozygous (carries a copy of both the short coat and long coat genes like the parents) and 25% homozygous for long coat (only carries the long coat gene). <br><br>In December 2010 the governing body in Germany suddenly reversed the ruling about long coats which allowed 'long coats with undercoat' to be registered, used for breeding and exhibited.<br><br>The long coat German Shepherd is a very appealing and attractive dog, especially as a puppy. However, their coats do require a bit more maintenance than the short coat as, like all long coat dogs, they will attract grass seeds, burrs, sticks, mud and so on. If you can provide this then there is no reason why you shouldn't consider a long hair. However, if the dog is going to be living in an environment where it will have access to plenty of grass seeds, mud, snow, sticks and various other sundry bits and pieces and you aren't able to provide the required maintenance then you probably should stick to the short coat.<br><br>Its important to note that, maintenance issues aside, coat length has absolutely no bearing on the conformation, temperament and working ability of the dog. Outside of the show ring the long coat has continued to be used as a working dog in all the traditional work places where GSDs are found - police force, armed services, guard dogs etc. They are also a very popular pet. It has a reputation for being a tough horse with a rugged constitution and more bone than its European counterparts and certainly the role it has played in the building of the Australian nation bears this out. The famous Waler horses, so sought after around the world as remounts during the Boer and 2 World Wars, were predominantly Australian Thoroughbred in breeding. And it was the Australian Thoroughbred and Thoroughbred crosses that worked stock on the rugged outback stations, carried troopers and soldiers around the countryside, worked as carriage and farm horses and generally accomplished feats of endurance that are difficult to believe today.){kind=link}
