My cousins and I – all kids by then, with my older cousin cleverly taking the lead - agreed to get rid of him ourselves, and promptly hid him downstairs in a spare room.<br><br>After that, it wasn't too difficult to convince our parents, as they were not quite as comfortable with the idea of discarding a little cuddly kitten we could save. Washing the little thing wasn't the usual nightmare it is with cats – little as he was, he didn't resist much – instead, it was another class of nightmare. Fleas tried to escape the deluge by climbing up our arms. Just writing this down gives me the urge to scratch my head.<br><br>Lord of the Fleas was at times affectionate and at others very independent. Though my cousins graciously acceded to saying he was “mine”, he went to live with my grandmother, who was happy to have him once he proved to be a “him”. I stayed there often, and Lord would always make his appearance and demand cuddles, which I was only too happy to provide.<br><br>In his greater bouts of independence he would go out hunting for females and come back looking like someone who had survived a month in the jungle with nothing but a knife. Still, even though this breed isn't very big, he was quite fit, and it is probable that there are many great-grandchildren of his going around today.<br><br>He was the perfect companion for my grandmother, who preferred pets who didn't bother her too much, who were useful in some way but did show affection every now and then. I liked “owning” this cat as a kid, but I would not get another, now – I like the velcro-pet type too much. If you want a more independent companion, however, this might be a good choice.){kind=link}
 that when I tried to pet them I always wondered if that vague softness I had felt was one of them or an illusion. Maybe I thought I touched it? In order to feel like I was petting one I felt that I would have to squash it – which, worry not, I did not do.<br><br>I say “try to pet” because they were not fans of being touched at all. These two belonged to a friend of mine, now a veterinarian, then a vet student like me, so he was no stranger to the concepts of easily socializing and etc. These two roborovskies proved to be too skittish for even a mostly trained specialist.<br><br>They were, however, extremely cute and nice to watch going about their lives in their multi-level cage. They didn't do much noise at night, unless their wheel had some kind of problem and creaked, or if they had no chew toys or treats, in which case they turned to noisily chewing the cage bars.<br><br>Their cages only turn smelly if you severely neglect to keep them clean.Unsurprisingly, such small animals produce small amounts of waste, and using appropriate litter will nullify the smell as long as you change it with some regularity. My friend had them in his room and never had any problems.<br><br>Overall, I'd say these hamsters make good pets for children and adults alike, but only if you want cute little mammals to watch and take care of; not if you're looking for a cuddly, affectionate friend.){kind=link}
