In my experience, nothing has a greater positive effect on the human condition than pet ownership. In many cases, a pet can come to represent family to those who have grown old or are otherwise alone. As we grow older, the world seems to become more hostile, less forgiving. A pet represents all that is innocent in the world and serves as a reminder of the purity of the universe He created for us. As I have aged, the significance of having an animal in my life has grown. I have seen older folks both with and without a pet in their lives and there seems to be a notable difference in the quality of their respective existences. There is something restorative in the relationship that man has with his companion animals.
