For the most part. They were very entertaining pets, always very very active, running around, burrowing, chewing everything, and... sparring with each other. <br>Gerbils were a "unique" choice, no one I knew had ever owned a gerbil. Their coloration wasn't that interesting, they looked like drab overgrown mice with kangaroo feet. The kangaroo feet made them slightly more entertaining than your standard hamster and they are pretty darn cute when they stand upright on those big feet. <br>Gerbils are fairly easy to care for, they need a secure enclosure. They need some shavings to run around it. They need things to chew, things to exercise on, and a place to bed down. <br>They are pretty hardy, though I did wind up taking my gerbils to the vet because I thought they looked sickly, and I thought they had attacked each other to the point of serious injury. Honestly, I wouldn't keep two together. Especially not two males. I'm pretty sure that despite them being brothers, family means nothing to a rodent. And even more honestly, I'm not a huge fan of rodents in general as pets. They can be messy, they can be a bit stinky, they can bite when you handle them and it's really hard to pick up psychological cues from them (so it seems like they just bite without negative stimuli), they can escape, and they do destroy everything their little teeth get on.){kind=link}

The other teacher had brought one into the classroom. I found the Leopard Gecko to be a very entertaining little reptile, as well as very attractive looking and appealing. The coloration of this animal is pleasant, and it doesn't look at all threatening or "scary", meaning that even the most squeamish of people should be able to tolerate its presence. <br>The Leopard Gecko needs a pretty simple habitat, with an enclosure, hiding spots, and lamps. It is easy to maintain, easy to properly fulfill its needs, and perfect for children who are learning to be responsible without the negatives of other potential pets. They are decently large, and spend a lot of their day sunning, which means that they are very visible.<br>Leopard Geckos eat other critters, such as crickets and mealworms. Their dietary preferences can turn off some people, for instance, I do not prefer to have creatures that I need to keep crickets for. It's also very important that the leopard gecko has enough calcium and D3, very important supplements for many reptiles.<br>One thing to watch out for is the gecko's ability to lose its tail when it feels threatened. It can stun or startle anyone to see a tail loose of its owner! However, children and others who will be handling the Leopard Gecko should be taught proper handling techniques so as not to injure the small animal. <br>Honestly, I believe the Leopard Gecko is a great starter reptile. They are friendly, attractive, and easy to care for and if cared for properly can live for a good number of years.){kind=link}
