We adopted him as a 1 year old from the shelter, but in retrospect, we're not sure how he passed the temperament test. He was extremely food-aggressive. <br><br>Although we attempted to train him ourselves, the training never quite stuck. Eventually, we gave up, and he never even mastered "sit." He was a fun-loving dog, though, and did enjoy to play, especially tug-of-war. He also had a strong prey-drive, which resulted in many rabbits and squirrels meeting an untimely demise in our yard. <br><br>The best trait that Charcoal had was that he was a fantastic guard/watch dog, which is true to the chow chow breed. He would alert us to any movement within a block of our house. He was, however, extremely fierce and would have to be put in the bedroom if any company came over, as he had a dog bite history. <br><br>As far as health and grooming, he was high-maintenance. He had a long, high-shedding coat, and required professional grooming every few months. He also suffered from frequent ear-infections, and eventually went completely deaf (around age 10) as a result. At 12, he went blind, and had to be put down at 13. <br><br>Charcoal was not friendly with other dogs and once broke his tie-out in the yard to attack the neighbor's german shepherd puppy, which required a vet visit. Although he enjoyed frequent walks, they were a hassle because of his strength and over-protective nature. <br><br>Overall, I would only recommend a poodle/chow mix for someone who is familiar with both breeds and is willing to devote a significant amount of time towards training and socialization.){kind=link}

My job was to exercise and handle the horses, to keep them from boredom. The main horse I worked with was Magic, a 14 year old. <br> <br>The first thing to know about retired thoroughbred rescues is that their health is not guaranteed. Racehorses are trained early, and very few go on to have successful careers. The early training often leads to health issues later in life which affect hooves, bones, and joints. The particular horse I worked with had a bad back that will plague him the rest of his life. <br> <br>Second, race horses do not receive much formal training, other than to run fast. When rescuing a race horse, you must be prepared to teach them ground manners and riding skills. However, thoroughbreds are extremely athletic and if properly trained, can make fantastic show horses, especially as hunter/jumpers. <br> <br>Thoroughbreds, in comparison to quarter horses, can be very high-strung. They need regular exercise and work, as they were bred for speed and power. Thoroughbreds do not make good "lawn ornaments" and without proper exercise, will develop bad habits. <br> <br>Thoroughbreds are not naturally great for trail riding, because they often want to lead the pack. Also, because of their high-strung nature, many can spook easily. <br> <br>Overall, I would recommend rescued thoroughbreds for someone with a good amount of horse experience, and time to devote to riding. It can be tempting to rescue a thoroughbred right off the bat, given they are typically extremely inexpensive, however, keep in mind that vet bills can add up very quickly. ){kind=link}

They breed easily as egg-layers, however the male fish will likely eat the young if precautions are not taken. <br><br>Convicts, like most cichlids, are remarkably hardy. As a teenager, I was not the most adept at caring for tanks, but my cichlids lived many years under non-optimal conditions. They are robust eaters, and do well on most fish foods. However, for full vibrancy in the females, I found a cichlid-formulated food to be best. <br><br>Overall, black convicts are great fish for those who are looking for a simple, adaptable, easy-to-breed species.){kind=link}
 approaches her, she flops over onto her back for a good, long belly rub. Claire, like most beagles, is extremely obedient and easy to train. She loves "smelly" treats, like cheese and liver, but will happily shake, sit, or roll-over for a pat on the head and encouraging words. Hound dogs are extremely intelligent, and enjoy games that involve using their nose. One of Claire's favorite past times is "hide and go treat" - where we would hide treats around the house and encourage her to find them. This game could keep her occupied for a very long time!<br><br>The basset hound is less athletic than the beagle, which makes this mix good for someone semi-active. Claire could run a few miles with us, but wasn't overly energetic, and was just as happy with a shorter walk. As with most hound dogs, she could be stubborn at times, too, but mostly only when something truly exciting caught her nose (like a rabbit).<br><br>Beagle/bassets are low-maintenance dogs, with short hair and minimal shedding. Their most captivating feature is their long, soft, velvety ears, which will make everyone want to stop and pet your dog while out on a walk :) Hounds are entertainers, though, so beagle/basset mixes like Claire LOVE the attention. <br><br>Hounds are family dogs, and most do best in a situation where they can be part of the family. Claire came from a situation where her family divorced and the dogs were all split up. She was the only dog who was sent to the rescue and this devastated her. She came to us extremely depressed, and wasn't truly happy again until her adoption, which included two kids and another beagle mix. <br><br>If you are looking for a good guard/watch dog, a beagle/basset mix is not for you. Unless your intruder is a rabbit or squirrel, these dogs are more likely to lick/kiss/beg for food than to protect the house. <br><br>Overall, beagle/basset mixes are great dogs for all types of people/situations. They are semi-active, affectionate, and great for families.){kind=link}
