Backyard Chicks are great urban agriculture animals to keep. Local laws govern the number of chicks one may acquire. They can be purchased from hobby stores in most nearby suburban areas. The Rhode Island Reds are my breed of choice. They are very good layers and are also good for meat afterwards. You will also need a coup or some place to store the hens and protect them from predators because seemingly everything likes chicken. Rhode Island Reds are pretty big birds about 7 pounds. Reds produce large brown eggs. Owners can expect to average about five eggs a week per hen. These chickens do well in northern areas hence the name Rhode Island, but also perform well in warmer climates.
