I only have a little experience with Rhode Island Red hens, but we've had a couple of RIR roosters for a couple of years, now. We had begun with two Buff Orpington roosters and one RIR, and the BO's were both far too aggressive. The RIR rooster is calm with people--though not terribly personable--and very protective of the hens.

The RIR is an excellent forager and resilient. We've had trouble with hawks in the past, and the RIR rooster is smart enough to call the hens under a tree whenever a hawk flies over or is in the vicinity. With this mature rooster, we have yet to loose any hens to raptors or varmints.
