Two years ago my family decided they wanted to raise chickens as a hobby. We went to our local farm and home store as they were selling baby chicks at the time. We bought 4 chicks we thought were all female, but one turned out to be a rooster! We raised the chicks in the house until they were old enough to go outside and live in their coop.
We purchased the chickens as pets, but found them to be very productive. We named this one Blackie and she is the friendliest of the bunch! Every now and then I can get her to eat out of my hand. I think if we didn't have the rooster around she would be even more friendly than she is. I think she would be a great chicken for kids as well. Since we do have 3 hens, we are not quite sure which ones lay what eggs, but we do get eggs daily. We hardly ever have to purchase eggs from the store anymore. We used to get 3 eggs a day, but lately we have gotten either 1 or 2 a day. I don't know what quality of meat this chicken would provide as this is our first batch of chickens.
I would recommend a Plymouth Rock to anyone who is wanting a chicken...whether the person is new to raising chickens or a seasoned professional. They are a great chicken to have around and very friendly!
