These four little birds came to us as hatch-lings when I was a child. My grandmother kept them in a cage over one long summer, and into part of the fall. I never understood where they came from, nor where they went after the season.

I do know, however, that they were bright little birds with a loud call. They seemed alert and friendly, coming over to the side of the cage en masse when you call one of them over. They seemed to compete with each other for attention, and huddle together to sleep. They would eat grasshoppers and sing, and sing, and sing.

They found a home with another family in the fall, but I did get to spend one summer of my youth with these amazing little birds.
