If you like raising ducks for meat, this is a great breed to get. Muscovy Ducks are hardy and put on meat fairly quick. Usually ducklings bought in the spring can be slaughtered for meat in the fall, if you feed a high protein duck feed you might be able to butcher them even sooner. Muscovy Ducks have a good temperament and are easy to take care of.
The meat quality is excellent and it is well worth the time and effort to pluck the ducks because the skin is even more wonderful. One really helpful trick for plucking a duck, or goose for that matter, is to use a wet cloth and an old iron to steam parts of the duck as you pluck, this will make the feathers come out much easier. Some of the hard to get wing feathers sometimes have to be removed with tweezers, and the leftover fuzz on the duck can be singed away with a small propane torch. Or if you prefer to go the high speed route, you could also buy or build an electric plucking machine. This may sound ridicules, but if you have a lot of birds you are butchering this is well worth the investment and will save you a ton of time and frustration. It will ensure you are getting all the best parts of the duck, the meat as well as the delicious skin. Muscovy Ducks are a great choice for a meat bird and once you taste the meat you will never want to try another.
