As a child I spent every opportunity I had helping out around my aunt's farm. There was a huge dairy and hundreds of cows to be milked each day. There were farm animals of each and every kind including pigs, goats, sheep, ducks, geese and more. Paradise for a child who loves animals.
Every so often there would be a little lamb or three who needed to be hand reared. So I made it my business to take responsibility for the little orphan lambs. I loved it! There is nothing cuter and more satisfying than watching them greedily grab the bottle of milk and gulping it down.
I suppose technically they were livestock, but as a child I thought of them as my own little kids. It taught me to be gentle, compasionate and kind. An important lesson for every child.
