I bought my reds last spring when they were about four months old. They started laying the next day. Unfortunately, I lost one to a hawk attack and one to illness and I now only own two.
They both lay fairly large, brown eggs. For the most part, they lay everyday. They stopped laying in early December and resume laying a few weeks ago.
They take the cold and take the heat. They are pleasant flock mates and they love to go foraging and exploring.
The Rhode Island Red is the ideal chicken for the first-time chicken owner. For $12 to $15 you can own a young hen that will immediately provide a fresh egg daily; instant owner gratification.
