Let me just start out by saying: I loved my donkey. It was loving and very calm with me personally. It would even let me ride it occasionally! As far as I remember, he was very docile and merely ate off the land and moseyed about wherever he could without causing any trouble. Whenever he was needed for carrying packs or anything of that sort, he was steady and very strong as well. I don't believe my family had any sort of trouble creating a livable habitat on our property for him. All he needed was a good dry place to sleep and greens to eat and he seemed happy enough. My donkey was not at all averse to affection and got along very well with my younger siblings and any other children he encountered. However, I don't believe a donkey would be exactly the right pet for anyone who expects a playful companion. Still! If you want a farm animal that's a hard worker and an animal that's easy enough to take care of, a donkey is the right one for you!
