We had a wonderful time with Shrek. Our family lived on a 5 acre farm with a creek bed, several goats, and lots of chickens. When a friend offered us a donkey in an attempt to downsize her own livestock, we brought Shrek home with us. He was a little skittish, but warmed up to us after a little while and was never aggressive. He scared away the coyotes from attacking our other animals, which is the primary purpose for many people to buy a donkey. For a family with kids, he was a blast.
As for cons, an animal like this requires a certain amount of upkeep. The fences had to stay in excellent condition and he needed shelter and regular food and hay. However, in comparison to a lot of other livestock, he was a breeze. He hung out with the goats and chickens, no problem and the fences that were suitable for them were generally suitable to keep him contained. He was perfectly happy to trot around our 5 acres and rarely got into trouble, except when he was chasing our billy goat around in circles (or being chased).
