We have 2 donkey's on our farm (petting zoo). They are typically very friendly, but very protective. If one of the donkey's is removed from the pasture for any reason, they other will let you know to bring him back! He is very loud until his friend is returned and will not tolerate anyone until he is returned. Many people think that donkey's are not smart, but I can tell you from experience they are very smart indeed. They will push their food bucket right up to the gate and know exactly what time to come back to get it! They are playful with each other - not so much around other animals (very protective) and can handle cold and hot temperatures well.
