My family had a male donkey for a few years. He was second hand - his previous owners moved away from the area and could not take him with them.
We had a field, so space wasn't a problem, but it's important to be aware that donkeys need quite a bit of room, plus a secure stable to sleep in at night. Our donkey was usually healthy, but if they get sick then the vet bills can be high.
He was somewhat stubborn, but this was part of his charm; he had plenty of character and everyone loved him. When I was young, I even used to ride him occasionally.
Final note: never stand too close to a donkey's hind legs. If they should kick out, either accidentally or on purpose, you can be seriously injured.
