I love having donkeys around. They're not everyone's cup of tea; they can be sullen and moody and a bit capricious; but I think that's what makes them great. Their personalities shine through and they can also be a lot of fun (when the mood takes them). I've never used donkeys for any commercial purpose, nor have I ever allowed them to be ridden - so I only know them from a "pet" perspective. They're incredibly hardy, and can put up with quite harsh weather conditions - so this makes them quite easy to provide for. They're happy as long as they've got somewhere warm at night and a bit of paddock for the day (especially with somewhere they can get out of the wind/rain, if necessary). They also (especially if they're not being worked) are not particularly difficult to feed (usual pony nuts, hay & fresh grazing). They are endlessly patient, so are OK to have around kids, although I'd keep an eye out for one of those mood changes, as you can sometimes get a unexpected nip!
