Dominiques are a great addition to a backyard flock

I raised some of my Dominiques from chicks and purchased some as pullets. I keep backyard chickens for eggs and meat, but aside from sustenance, I also want a beautiful flock. (In the city, chickens are an oddity. I liked to show them off!)

The black and white stripes of Dominiques are lovely. The dark brown eggs we collected were beautiful. We fed them organic grain feed and let them forage for worms, bugs and grass. The hens laid regularly and the yolks were a deep, vibrant orange. The birds I raised from chicks were friendly and ate from my hand.

Like any chicken breed: roosters are a problem. I ate our rooster to spare myself aggressive behavior and loud crowing at all hours of the day. (He was excellent in coq au vin!)
