I have had experience with other breeds of cattle but just recently discovered the older breed of Dexters. I was looking for a dual purpose breed of cattle that didn't require a lot of space and wasn't intensely line bred. I believe the older dual purpose breeds are hardier, more disease resistant, and retain the characteristics that many of the cross breeds are trying to establish. They have a gentle desposition and are small enough not to be intimidating to a first time owner.
The only down side I have encountered so far is the lack of knowledge in the general public about Dexters. If you are raising the cattle for resale, they will not do as well in a general auction invironment with other breeds as they are smaller. Private sales work a lot better.
