Living in the Balkan countryside means that almost everyone in your neighbourhood has had or is having at least a couple of hens. Some of them are being very grateful for their hens, others complain more often than it seems they should. But one chicken breed was specifically praised for its capabilities. The croatian chicken!
They were about three months when we got them, since they were already all grown up. We had doubted their productivity, but we were more than happy with them! We did not take any special care about them, kept them in the same cage we had been keeping our hens before and it worked just fine. Our cage is secured from any intruder animals, which is very important to have in mind when setting the cage up. Of course, no chickens can be kept in a small place for a long time. Every day we would let them wander around our fenced field. But placing them back in cage at the end of the day was not an easy task, even though we had to do it, due to fear of snakes and foxes that could possibly harm them.
Every single day they would hatch at least one egg (some days even two!) which we found to be great. Having those tasty and healthy eggs for breakfast would bring smile to anyone's face! At the time we slaughtered them, they were about 3kgs. A lot of delicious meat!
I still have not heard from a person who was not happy with croatian chickens, so I would certainly suggest you to give it a try!
