Growing up on a farm, I was used to the menagerie we had running around.
In my teen years, for whatever reason, my brother decided to breed and raise quail.
He had a nice coop set up under shady trees and I remember the birds being very easy to handle.
I also recall that they were fairly low maintenance to keep. As mentioned, my brother did keep them in a good sized coop. They had protection from the elements (and coyotes) but also could enjoy fresh air and have room to roam.
Quail meat is very tasty and I've ordered it a few times over the years when I actually saw it on a restaurant menu (which isn't often).
I think Quail may be an overlooked option as a project for kids to raise. They are pretty birds and not very large. The eggs are small and the babies quite cute.
