When it comes to pets, I'm usually for smarter pets. I like pets I can interact with. When I was younger, I had a guinea pig that I never felt any strong connection with because it couldn't have cared less about me. Well, to an extent, chickens are the same way (unless it's feeding time). But there are two big differences: one, when someone owns a chicken, they usually own multiple chickens. While they may not interact with you, it's endlessly entertaining watching them interact with each other. Two, for those who aren't into slaughter or hunting but would still like some self-sustained protein at home, chickens are an ideal pet. They are so easy to maintain -- they put themselves to bed in the coop at night, for gosh sake! And they provide you with endless sustenance. While they may not be the most emotionally rewarding pet, the bond you form with them based off of what they provide to you can be a very different experience than any other pet. Free range only!
