My few Cochins have been terrible layers, but then, they're primarily meant to be meat birds. I did a few as a trial a few years back and did find that they came out a very generous 7-8 pounds per bird, but were slow to mature and I suspect that they weren't particularly efficient eaters--consuming quite a bit of bought feed per pound at time of slaughter. They weren't a repeat for me, but I can see them being an attractive prospect for someone who keeps chickens as pets--mine were docile despite minimal handling, and who can resist those little feather pants?
