We've had a few different breeds of chickens on the farm and honestly I only have experience with the laying hen aspect. I've never eaten the chickens, but I guess there's always a chance. The eggs from the Red are very large, brown, and delicious. There's kind of a stigma associated with brown eggs vs. white eggs, but it's mostly just talk. There's very little difference besides the color. I've eaten both and with a little salt and pepper probably couldn't tell the difference. I've had a good experience with Rhode Island Reds, and the only thing I can negatively say about them is we once had a rooster that was very ornery and scared me as a child. The hens have always been easy going and productive.
