I lived with a family that was raising a lot of their "pets" for meat, mainly cows, pigs, and rabbits. They didn't name the animals as to avoid becoming attached, but I was quick to give them all monikers.

Pepe the Pig was a great pet. She was incredibly friendly and if it had been up to me we would have kept her as opposed to sending her to the slaughter.

While she held up well in extreme desert heat, we did have to provide her with a shaded area to escape to, as Chester White Pigs are susceptible to sunburn. They tend to roll in mud to keep themselves cool, whilst also protecting their skin!

If you want to breed a Chester White, they have the biggest litters of most pigs, and the meat is of a really high quality, too, so you get the best of both worlds... along with a really sweet pet in the meantime.
