Our Partridge Chanteclers are some of our favourite chickens. We became interested in them because of their status as a rare heritage breed, and because they do well in colder climates. They are a dual purpose bird, with the hens laying well and the cockerels reaching a good size for eating. This makes our Chantecler rooster a good choice for our mixed flock.
The Partridge colouring means the hen's feathers are a nice brown with black edges, and a green sheen. They make great free rangers, the colour blends in with foliage so they don't stand out to hawks as easily as a white bird. They are some of the most intelligent chickens we have owned - once they even escaped their run and came to the house to alert me to a racoon nearby!
