4 chickens in our backyard

My dad purchased 4 chickens from our local 4H chapter for laying eggs for our family. I remember being very confused as a kid that we were getting chickens, which to me were strictly a farm animal, when we lived in the middle of a very urban city.

After a couple of weeks with these four hens though, I grew to appreciate them. They weren't particularly friendly, but if I went slowly, I could approach them to pet them and feel their feathers. My dad would take me in their coop with him to get their eggs every couple of days. Between the four hens, we ended up with at least a couple of eggs every day for breakfast!

I think our landlord eventually grew tired of the questions he got from our confused neighbours though, and asked my dad to get rid of the chickens. I was definitely sad to see them go, because they fascinated me as a kid.

If you're thinking about getting backyard chickens in order to collect eggs, I think it would be much easier these days given that everyone is thinking more about fresh food and where our food comes from. Just be ready to answer questions about having chickens in the city and getting some strange looks; it's still worth it!
