Acquired: Breeder (non-professional, hobby breeder)

We bought 3 Cayugas at one week old from a hobby breeder. These birds are beautiful. When young they are a black, fluffy ball of cuteness. They grow very rapidly so one of the easier breeds to sex early. They are black in colour but in the sunlight they have the most amazing green tint to their feathers which also looks purple in certain lights. They lay black eggs when about 5 months old onward. Not one of the most prolific layers at an average of 150-200 a year. As with all ducks they are extremely messy from birth onwards. When under the heat they would probably need to be cleaned every day and once outside I would suggest cleaning their hut out twice a week. Ducks also need a pond or water tray to swim in. They make excellent garden pets. If you don't mind the amount of cleaning needed and the inconsistent egg laying then these birds will be just great for you.
