Buckeye chickens are a great addition to anyone's farmyard. Their name comes from the color of the Buckeye nut. They are beautiful birds. They lay well and flesh out well if you need your backyard flock to work for you. They reproduce fairly easily. Hens can go broody and the eggs take well to incubation. Buckeyes are very hardy and chicks have a very high survival rate.
These birds do well with other birds and take well to coop-style or pasture-style living arrangements. The birds can be difficult to acquire because the breed is currently rebuilding. However, if you are located in the Midwest it should not be too difficult. The only note of caution I would provide is that they are fairly large birds. They are not going to fit into cramped quarters. Please make sure you have enough room before you purchase these birds.
Overall, they are a great all-around backyard/farm bird. They would make a great addition and the breed needs support so it would be a great choice if you are interested in preserving heritage birds!
