Chickens - As American as Apple Pie

Growing up on a farm we always had chickens running around. I never thought twice about having fresh eggs versus store bought eggs. I don't know when I even found out that some people actually had to buy eggs.
Our chickens pretty much kept to themselves unless someone came out to feed them or if one of the farm wagons hit a rut and spilled a little corn in the farmyard.
They would occasionally go in by the horses or cattle but they never went to the road or even very far from the barn and pasture area.
I now see a growing variety of chickens at the county fair and think that chickens would make a good 4H project for a child.
The Buckeye chicken is one that was bred to tolerate the cold winter weather I often experienced in the Midwest.
