Brown Sex-Links (AKA Isa Browns) is THE chicken breed I recommend for people. They lay eggs almost everyday, are very calm animals, usually has pretty coloring....
But I always warn people about the troubles that come with them. It's not simply a matter of cleaning out coops and worrying about keeping them warm for winter. Chickens are very much on the bottom of the food chain; not just with humans, but with the likes of hawks and weasels. A good day can turn heartbreaking when you find a pile of feathers where a missing chicken used to be....
However, I will speak volumes for the Brown Sex-Link's personality in general. I've seen them all; followers, pets, survivors...
Take my current chicken- Blondie. All of her sister were taken by hawks, yet somehow, she had the survival instinct to outsmart said birds of prey. Yet at the same time, she'll follow you and let you pet her.
If you want a chicken, Brown Sex-Link is the way to go. However, if you're a chicken newbie, I would suggest a small flock of maybe three or four at first.
