The Broad Breasted White Turkey is the Cornish Cross of the Turkey world. I raised these wonderful meat birds in 3ft by 6ft by 3ft pens and they did fantastically. I wanted to raise my own Thanksgiving Turkey one year, and had read that they are the largest meat breed, and to select males only if that's your purpose. Well, Storey's Guide to Raising Turkeys was absolutely right. I began that year in June with three day old males and raised them until the fourth week of November. By the time they were butchered each one weighed in a an incredible 65+ pounds! They do eat a great deal of feed, and require a relatively large space compared to other poultry breeds but they're worth it. There's nothing like butchering your own Turkey for Thanksgiving and feeling that connection with the earliest European Americans. In addition to being an exceptional meat bird Broad Breasted Whites are docile, and fairly pretty in a uniform sort of way. They do not begin gobbling until 5 to 6 months of age, and they cannot naturally reproduce as their breasts are too large.
