I believe if people eat meat, they should know where it comes from so they can have respect and appreciation. We raised 2 turkeys as part of a 4H project. This breed was better tasting and easier to clean than the bronze. Finished weight was 22.5 pounds.
Turkeys are noisy, messy, not super bright, and can be a bit aggressive. Never-the-less, my hunting dog learned to get along with the turkeys and the chickens in our backyard. It was a good experience and I'm glad we learned about it, but it's more expensive to raise your own turkey than to purchase one at the grocery store. However, we liked knowing we were eating a healthy, organic, free-range bird. It was a lot of work and they eat a lot. Chickens are much easier as far as poultry go. If I lived on a ranch or a farm, I would consider doing it again, if I could find a better source than paying so much for feed at the feed store. I'd estimate that we spent about $100 per bird on raising them ourselves. That's an expensive dinner.
