This is the most popular breed of turkey for commercial meat production. They produce the most breast meat of any turkey and because they are white the pin feathers are less visible when the carcass is dressed. Average adult birds are typically 38-40 lbs but can get as heavy as 50 pounds. Because they grow so fast and fat they are prone to health problems such as heart disease, respiratory failure and joint damage and bumble foot. If you keep as a pet you must put the turkey on a diet to prevent excess weight gain. Turkeys are very curious and friendly and will follow you around the yard to see what you are doing or hang around a window or screen door when they hear you.
I really enjoyed having this friendly bird around.
