We have a mixed flock of chickens for eggs and pleasure. I enjoy all of them, but one of my favorite breeds is the Buff Brahma. They're good layers and winter hardy. But I especially love their patterning, coloring and feathered feet. The Brahmas are also the most friendly and gentle in our flock.
Unfortunately, the gentle temperament in our Brahmas does not extend to mothering. Our Brahmas get broody, perhaps more so than some of the others. But so far our Brahmas are only willing to sit on eggs, not to raise the hatchlings. We saved an accidental chick this summer after the hen killed the others. I don’t know if this is a problem in the breed or related to our laissez-faire approach to poultry-raising. Since we’re not trying to breed birds, it doesn’t diminish our enjoyment of Brahmas.
