We had five hens and one Roo.
From around the 6-month mark, they were laying around 4-5 times a week. Excellent egg layers. They are quite heavy so we didn't need high fencing. They do well in cold weather (which is great considering I live in the UK and it's always freezing), and they are quite docile, good with kids and even other animals. They like being out and about, we had an acre garden, fenced, so we let them run around then put them back in the run.
They can get a bit broody, I know usually they aren't supposed to be, but 3 out of 5 did get quite broody. Sometimes, they would even lay 5-6 eggs in a week depending on the time of year etc.
The eggs are delicious as well.
They make good pets, they are friendly and quite calm. They are underrated as pets, but I would highly recommend them as my experience of keeping them was a good one.
