Good functional pet - not much emotional connection

We got a rooster and a few hens, but unfortunately they didn't have any chicks that made it past a few days old. However, they made a lovely addition to the garden; they look wonderful and even though roosters do make quite a lot of noise, their sounds grow on you after a while! The hens laid nice eggs, but not consistently throughout the year.
If you are looking for an emotional connection with your pet, poultry probably isn't for you - they are more a decorative and functional kind of animal, at least in my experience. The other downside is that you have to clean the chicken house/coop every week, in all weathers, and it can smell really bad.
