When getting into chickens I wanted a pretty egg layer; so I purchased 12 Barnevelder eggs from a professional breeder. 7 of the 12 eggs hatched; 5 of them were cockerels and 2 of them were pullets. We raised them with 4 Rhode Island Red hens; compared to the Rhode islands they grew much slower. Barnevelders are a rarer breed of chicken so they can be a little bit pricier, I bought the 12 eggs for around $47.
Barnevelders can be very sweet but then sometimes they can be skittish. One of my barnevelder hens love to sit down and watch TV with me. I gave my 5 roosters to a friend, an animal trainer took in one of my roosters; she is now training him to be in movies. So that can give you a good idea on how tame the roosters can be.
